City of Fairfax, Virginia
Certified Historic Markers Program

Action:
Celebrate the rich history of the Fairfax Court House area by sponsoring the
erection of a Historic Marker.

History:
With half of the City’s acreage existing on the original 1714 Land Grant of
George Mason II, Fairfax enjoys the distinction of being the seat of the Fairfax
County Court House since 1800. In 1861 the Fairfax Court House area became
the front line of the Confederate defenses and was the site of the first troop engagement of the Civil War. It was the birthplace of the “Confederate Battle
Flag” and the location of President Davis’ “Fairfax Court House Conference” on
October 1, 1861. It later served as the Headquarters site of both the Confederate
and Union “Army of the Potomac.” On its rolling hills were once located
extensive fortifications and gun emplacements and the temporary camps of
thousands of soldiers wearing both the blue and the gray.

Process:
Persons or Organizations interested in marking our history through sponsorship
and/or erection of a certified historic marker may begin the process by
contacting the City Manager, City of Fairfax, at 10455 Armstrong Street; Fairfax,
VA 22030 and requesting a copy of the “Fairfax City- Historic Fairfax City Inc. Procedures Document.” The procedure applies to markers of the following types:

  1. Vehicle Viewed Markers located along State Highways.
2. Vehicle Viewed Markers located along City Streets.
3. Walking Tour Markers located either along State Highways or City Streets and mounted either on a building or a pedestal.

Applicants will fund the marker, define the proposed marker text and provide
primary source documentation to support each statement. Historic Fairfax City
Inc. (HFCI) will arrange for peer review of the proposed statement and, where appropriate, will forward the application to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources for their review.
