Celebrating Historic Preservation Month in Fairfax City

Thank you to Mayor Read and the City Council for recognizing the importance of historic preservation to the character of our city and the lives of our residents and visitors.

On April 22, Mayor Read and the City Council released the official city proclamation for Historic Preservation Month. The proclamation reads:

WHEREAS, National Preservation Week started in 1973 to raise awareness
about the importance of preserving our past for future generations.
In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential
proclamation recognizing National Preservation Week which
expanded to month-long celebration in 1985; and

WHEREAS, Historic preservation is an effective tool for economic vitality,
tourism, planning, growth management, and neighborhood
revitalization, helping to foster local pride and enhancing
community character and pride; and

WHEREAS, Preservation is celebrated everyday with stewardship of the
City of Fairfax’s three public historic sites: Fairfax Museum and
Visitor Center, Historic Blenheim, and Ratcliffe-Allison-Pozer House
which welcome visitors with exhibitions, programs, and information;
and

WHEREAS, “Preserve the Past; Protect the Future” is the theme of National
Preservation Month 2025 and will be observed in the City of Fairfax
with a Cemetery Preservation Program on May 17 at Historic
Blenheim and with a walking tour of the Old Town Fairfax National
Register Historic District led by Historic Fairfax City, Inc. (HFCI) on
May 31; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, CATHERINE S. READ, Mayor of the City of Fairfax, do hereby
proclaim May 2025 as National Preservation Month in the City of
Fairfax and encourage the community to participate in activities that
foster awareness and appreciation of historic structures and historic
contributions to shaping the history of the City of Fairfax, Virginia.
